Lime copper Comtoise `Eugène Vivien à Ste. Soulle `, France, mid-1870

Beschrijving: Beautiful small anchor escapement Comtoise with harp garland and pear-shaped weights from around 1870 with day marking, signed: `Eugène Vivien à Ste. Soulle`.The name Comtoise is derived from the geographical name Franche-Comté -literally: free county-, an area composed of the French departments of Jura, Doubs, Haute-Saône and the Territoire de Belfort. In addition to Comtoise clocks, they are also known as Morbier clocks -for the town in the Jura where, or so the story goes, the first clock of this type was made by a blacksmith named Mayet-. They are also known as Morez clocks, for the small French town near Morbier that is just 20 km from the Swiss border and became a transportation hub for the burgeoning clock trade. And because Franche-Comté overlapped with the former county of Burgundy in the east, these clocks are also called Burgundian clocks.
